About this work

Aizome, traditional Japanese indigo dye. A reduction vat of fermentation and the dried leaf. The fabric enters yellow-green, exits blue as oxygen hits the air. Repeated dips build depth of color.

These experiments explore the limits of the process: how dark, how even, how layered. The final pieces push further, combining indigo with cochineal to see what happens where the two dyes meet. Part of Art 185LJ at UC Santa Barbara, 2023.
